WHEN DID IT START?
The sessions started off a three years ago as casual acoustic sessions
with Mex merrick and Pete Rothwell playing guitar and singing around the
fire, huddled from the winter cold!
It wasn't long before the sound of live music on a day when little else
was happening proved an attractive alternative to Sunday TV! Since then,
more and more people have got to hear about it and regularly take advantage.
Since then of course Boscastle has seen a major flood which destroyed
not only the Welly Long Bar but most of the first floor as well. It was
a few months of hard slog before the Welly was fully functioning again
but now sports a brand new bar where we continue to ply our wares. We
have now added a small PA system which is a great benefit on busier days
and ensures that quieter performers can be clearly heard.
Pete and Mex have now split into two seperate acts. Mex is continuing
Sunday afternoons with Vanessa Williams (bass), Helen Bartrop (vocals)
and Martin Hocking (guitar). Veteran fretless player Colin Boyd pops in
now and again and Howard Irons (see below)also has been standing in when
Vanessa is not available. He may well be seen with Mex & Co more often
in one or more of his guises.
Every week sees visiting performers plying their wares and a host of different
styles brings changes every week.
Pete and
Mex still accompany each other on occasion but Pete is currently concentrating
on working with Jesse Burke (vocals and guitar) and Welly regulars Simon
and Andy (bass and drums) See
the music page and watch the poster boards in the bar for gig details.
WHEN
DOES IT HAPPEN?
3pm
- 6pm every Sunday from October to May.
During the
summer months June, July, August, September we stage occasional garden
parties instead when the session will also include a barbecue, special
drinks promotions and themes such as local artists or crafts etc. We also
include something for the children such as face painting etc. (if
the weather is not suitable we just move the whole thing inside). For
details of these see the music page. Alternatively
look out for posters or phone 01840 250202 or call in
and ask any member of staff.
WHY
NOT PLAY?
We are keen to offer any other performers a space to sing or play especially
encouraging new performers or anyone wanting to give their material an
airing in a welcoming and encouraging atmosphere.
